Heat Pumps

The very first ground sourced heat pump was invented by American man, Robert C. Webber in the late 1940s. His idea came from experimenting with his deep freezer. His hands got burnt as he touched the outlet pipes of the cooling system. Where others would stop there, Webber decided to see if he could reverse the mechanics. “He connected the outlet piping from a freezer to a hot water heater and, since the freezer was producing a constant excess heat, he hooked up the heated water to a piping loop”. A small fan was then used to blow the warm air into the building. The next step was to install one in his home, and so he did. With his copper tubing buried in the ground, Freon gas was ran through them to gather ground heat. The gas was condensed in his cellar, gave off its heat and forced the expanded gas through the ground coil to pick up another load.

Today, heat pumps are considered the most efficient and cost- effective heating in the marketplace. They are remarkably environmentally friendly, and they can drastically reduce your carbon footprint and energy bills. They offer an ideal way to heat your property and produce hot water whilst saving money and the earth’s precious resources.

The Advantages of Heat Pumps

  • Heat pumps are much safer than systems that are based on combustion.
  • They are cheaper to run than oil and gas boilers.
  • The system reduces your carbon emissions, and it has an efficient conversion rate of energy to heat.
  • Less maintenance than combustion heating systems.
  • Can provide cooling during the summer, effectively making it an air conditioner.
  • They have a very long lifespan of up to 50 years. As a result, they are extremely reliable and a steady source of heat.
  • You may be eligible for payment under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

The Disadvantages of Heat Pumps

  • Heat pump systems have a high start-up cost.
  • They are fairly difficult to install, especially as research must be undertaken in order to understand the movement of heat, local geology, as well as the heating and cooling requirements for your household.
  • Some heat pumps experience trouble in cold areas which can damage the system. Therefore, full efficiency during the cold seasons cannot be reached. However, there are possibilities of an upgraded heat pump system that could overcome this problem.
